Today Tyler Cowen announced the 56th cohort of Emergent Ventures winners, one of whom was me!! I have money now!

In addition, I received an email from {{REDACTED}} about being mentored, which seems cool! They’re a linguistics professor who dabbles in AI evaluation. One thing I noticed about their papers is that they have a much more prominently “academic” register. Reading (skimming) their paper was much more enjoyable than typical papers but also much more taxing. I felt the same way as I do when I’m listening to somebody who has a thick accent (particularly a thick French accent): I can understand the individual words, but the thought required to decipher the individual words expels from my working memory the knowledge of the previous words, making it much more difficult to comprehend a sentence.

I photographed some geese today, but it’s too late for me to make a separate geese post so I will do it tomorrow.

I printed out “You and Your Research” by Richard Hamming today and wish to read it tomorrow.

I read Understanding LSTM Networks by Chris Olah today. I sketched it out and it was actually quite simple. I’m implementing it, in JAX specifically so that I can brush up on my skills there.

Tomorrow I need to do a LOT of work for my religion class. Like, a TON.

Finally, I also need to top up my DeepSeek API key. I use it for ensuring all of these posts are kosher to go on to the internet. The way I do it is that I use obsidian’s daily notes feature where I just write everything (that’s what I’m writing right now), and then anything that is personal or embarrassing or that I’m contractually obliged to not reveal to others or whatever I just redact when making my post. One time, though, a few weeks ago, I accidentally copied and pasted the unredacted version, so I implemented a system where DeepSeek audits all of the posts before they go out on to the internet. I’m especially worried about this because all of the posts are pushed to a public GitHub repository.

{{REDACTED}} from [[Org Runpod]] gave me $1000 in compute!

I have to update my website’s about me and projects and research sections.
